I am so excited to be a part of this super great linky with Michelle at The 3AM Teacher and Julie and Krista at   The Reading Olympians!
With this linky, I was able to use a lesson with my third grade students, using The Olympians program.  Because of snow, testing, and Spring Break, I only was able to get in one part of the lesson, but the kids really enjoyed it.

One of the items the kids really struggled with this year was the suffix -er.  They were unable to tell what it meant when added onto a word.  So, this was a perfect place to work with them.  I led the students in singing the little rap for the suffix -er, which they LOVED!  I kept hearing them sing it throughout the school for the short week we were there.

Then, we started on the work.  Since -er means two things, we split the cells in the word map up to make it work better for us.  Here is what we did.
Definitions first

a list of words that mean "one who"

a picture for one of the words ~ diver

Sentence

words for -er meaning a comparision

-er picture
-er sentence
The next day we worked on -est and comparing more than two things.  I gave them a little more freedom with this, as they had an idea of how to use the program.  This was a lot easier for them because they understood the ins and outs of it all.

This program is great!  Students really need to work on prefixes and suffixes to better understand words, and this program covers it perfectly!  I plan to actually put this into full use next year with my third grade intervention groups and maybe some of my second grade groups.  I know they will LOVE it!
